Blogging Visually

May.6th.2008 • 2:16AM 13 Comments

This is the story about a guy and confidence. Said guy lacks said confidence so he tries to go about ways to circumvent it. Honestly the post doesn’t make that much sense, but there’s no use in telling you the ending in the summary.

Confidence. I lack it.

In this case it’s confidence in my ability to write. My lack of confidence in everything else can be equated the metaphorical elephant in the room.

It’s quite the double-edged sword, blogging is. On one hand, I can talk in ways here that would get me slapped across the face. Not that I do, but I could. On the other hand, I seem to suck at the only language I know how to speak in. I have habits of writing really long run-on sentences and overuse commas, so much so that it starts ...

The Design Distortion

March.30th.2008 • 6:26PM 23 Comments

This is the story about a guy, a guy who could be seen as not wanting to write a post about how his recent redesign. It could also be seen as a way to vary the type of posts said guy does write. Either way, this is a behind-the-scenes walkthrough of Distortion.

For once in my career, I’m actually going to talk about the a design I did. I don’t think I’ve ever done that. I usually just say I will and then forget after realizing how much work it would take to gather all the screenshots. But no more! With the power of ScreenFlow I shall finally bring to you a very casual walkthrough of the design behind Distortion.

It’s 30 minutes of me talking, Jen typing and the kitties even hiss! I think you can hear sirens as well, but just ignore that, my headset ...

The Message is Distorted

March.26th.2008 • 12:00AM 65 Comments

This is the story of a guy, a design and a domain. After almost a year of nothing substantial, the domain decided to take matters into its own hands and promptly beat the guy into submission; telling him to put the damn sniper rifle down and finish the design he started.

It’s been 7 years, 5 months and 23 days. Never have I felt so drained after preparing a website for this domain before, but this really brings light to the phrase, “you get what you put in.” I’ve had long hiatuses before. However, none have seemed as long or drawn out as this one, and with this post and this new design I am proud to put an end to it. So, let’s start at the top shall we? I’m sure you’d like to know a little more about the 25th version of Avalonstar ...

A Bit Oversimplistic?

August.9th.2006 • 12:34PM No Comments

This is the story of a guy and his namesake. The result of said namesake’s design turns out to be really simple, but quite effective.

(or _The Making of bryanveloso.com_)

Boxes. Yeah, I’ll do boxes,” I said to myself yesterday. About fifteen minutes later, I had finished. Well, let me give you some background first. A lot of you know that I finally acquired my name after almost having it slip away from me at the hands of domain squatters. Needless to say, I was freakishly excited when I got it. However, all of that freakish excitement faded away after I sat down to think about what I’d do with it. So I thought, well, what do other people do ...

Logos of Times Gone By

June.17th.2006 • 10:41AM No Comments

This is the story of a guy and some logos. Specifically, logos that he made a long time ago. The Wayback Machine did something right and saved said logos and the time has come to show them off.

Archive.org did something right for once. It kept images of logos I did from Version 12 (ChaoticSoul) of Avalonstar, so I decided the world see something that I used to be able to do. Back in 2002, I was really big on making logos, so much so that I made 5 of those that you’ll see below in one day. (Man, I miss those days when inspiration really ran free.) I believed the streak came to an end when I finally decided on using the Phoenix logo for Avalonstar. Ever since then, I haven’t designed any ...

Where Was I?

April.11th.2006 • 3:12PM No Comments

This is the story of a guy and a meme. The meme is asking where said guy was 10 years, 5 years and 1 year ago. The guy reminisces again and elaborates on some of the lesser told stories of his history.

Although I was really trying to keep myself from doing meme’s, the one that Jeff Croft (but apparently Dan Rubin beat him to it) tagged me with provided me with a bit of a challenge. For one, it has been a while since I’ve thought so far back, and two, doing so would offer me some time to reminisce. However, unlike Jeff’s answers, I’ll be presenting mine backwards, as I’m sure you’d like to discover more about the 13-year-old Bryan than the 22-year-old Bryan.

Where was I ten years ago?

Ten years ago ...

Reminiscing

September.11th.2005 • 7:08PM No Comments

This is the story of two guys who had an IM conversation one day that connected their past a little more than they would have thought. They reminisce about the last era of this website and the friends it had—comparing it to the present.

I don’t know what it is about me and Benzinger but it seems like we get into the weirdest conversations about the “good ‘ol days.” Then again, I like to reminisce about those days and see how far I’ve come. That whole “knowing your past before creating your future,” kind of thing. So this was the first time this happened:

Brian: do you remember anything resembling… xist, xotech, xpired, xposure, xposed, etc back in the day? Me: Um… Brian: like.. a few years back, maybe 4 or 5. Brian: well, my brother said he remembers you from ...

Wayback Follies

August.14th.2005 • 5:30PM No Comments

This is the story of a guy and a website. The website in question is known for not doing the job it was made to do, as it likes to lose the history it was created to index. Said guy tries to cope with the eventual loss of his old websites by said underachiever.

As much as I’d like to say I’m a fanatic of forward-thinking, I am a lover of history. This story in particular focuses on the history of the sites I visit, and why I seemed to get the short end of the stick.

In freshman year of college, I got infected by my first virus and oddly it corrupted all my CSS and JPG files. So pretty much any site I had designed from 2000 to 2002 was gone. Sure I still had the code, but it wasn’t the same without the images. Fast forward to ...
